“At a national level, about a third of college students struggle with food insecurity, trying to figure out where their next meal is going to come from.”
And that is something Executive Director Dan Skoglund knew the Muskegon Rescue Mission could help provide.
The nonprofit has partnered with Baker College, Muskegon Community College and Orchard View Adult Education to stock and run student pantries to help with necessities they might otherwise struggle to have.
“For many students that are attending school, they really are on their own, trying to figure it out, using financial aid. They’re away from home, trying to find housing and food.”
The pantries will offer a variety of easy-to-open microwavable foods as well as other groceries, personal hygiene items and school supplies.
“We’re partnering with them through our thrift stores to provide clothing to their students that will need that for job readiness or just as winter is approaching to have appropriate clothing for the cold temperatures.”
The pantries are open 24 hours accessed through student ID’s.
