The proposed redevelopment of Muskegon’s former Shaw Walker Furniture factory will not receive a second state budget earmark.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed $3 million in state funding for Parkland Properties’ plan to turn the former Shaw Walker Furniture Company building at 930 Washington Avenue in Muskegon into a mixed-use building.

This after Whitmer approved an $18 million earmark one year ago to support the $220 million project.

The Muskegon City Commission approved the Shaw Walker project site plan on Tuesday, which includes turning the 730,000 square foot factory into 546 residential units, a restaurant, and retail outlets.

Parkland Properties President Jon Rooks has said he hopes to break ground on the project this fall and finish within 4 to 5 years.

The proposed earmark was one of five line-item vetoes totaling $9.2 million. Other vetoes included $3 million for gas stations that sell E15 gasoline blended with ethanol, $425,000 for a private gun club near Saginaw and $250,000, for a proposed property rehabilitation in Detroit.

No word yet on how this veto will affect the construction timeline for the Shaw Walker property.
