“The road commission has not had an increase in a while”

Muskegon County commissioner Darrell Paige says the five county road commissioners have not had a pay raise since 2017.

“And I think they are doing the best job they can do with the budget they have.”

So, Paige and a majority of county commissioners support raising the pay for road commissioners by 50 percent. Commission chair Charles Nash says it is consistent with other increases in the county.

“We just gave ourselves raises we’ve also given our staff raises.”

The road commissioner pay increases from $4,364 hundred to $6,400 hundred a year. The chair from $4,900 to $7,300.

“it’s not like we are raising it a lot of money we are talking maybe four or five thousand dollars.”

The five road commissioners meet about twenty times a year to set road commission policy. The pay increase is less than originally proposed. County commissioner Jessica Cook thinks 50 percent is sufficient.

“I want to make sure I am being responsible with taxpayer’s dollars.”
