Muskegon Heights post office needs more space, may move out of city

“The space they are in now they are out of space at that site.”

Acting Muskegon Heights city manager Melvin Burns says the building the post office rents at 2517 Peck Street is no longer big enough to sort the mail and serve customers at the counter.

“And they don’t know what direction they are going now, whether they will look for one bigger facility or separate what they call retail from the sorting operations in the back.”

Residents in zip code 49444 served by the Muskegon Heights Post Office got a notice asking for feedback and recommendations for a new location in the city. Council member Kellie Kitchen responded.

“You have to actually send an actual letter. I guess since it’s the post office they want you to buy some stamps they want you to use a stamp.”

The facility on Peck Street is the only post office in Muskegon Heights. Acting city manager Burns says he is working with the real estate agent for the post office.

“They periodically will look for other options. They did this about 20 years ago and nothing came of it, but we certainly want to stay on top of that.”
