Leaders in Grand Rapids have plans to construct a pedestrian bridge over the Grand River that would connect neighborhoods on Grand Rapids’ west side to the new Acrisure Amphitheater, and into the downtown area.
The bridge would connect from the corner of Watson and Front Streets on the west side to Williams Street SW on the east side.
The Grand Rapids-Kent County Convention Arena Authority shows the bridge as part of the ongoing downtown development plan to connect neighborhoods, improve safety, and provide more transportation options for residents.
Congresswoman Hillary Scholten recently announced the bridge is on her list of 15 community projects she’s requesting federal funds to support in 2025.
“One of them is this pedestrian bridge which is going to be so critical for the development of Grand Rapids, as we’re drawing more pedestrians downtown with the soccer stadium and the amphitheater development – there’s just so much happening.”
Scholten is requesting $2 million for the project which would also increase accessibility for people mobility challenges to public transportation, schools and services.
