Drinkers in Grand Rapids will soon have another area where they can walk around outside drinking an alcoholic beverage

Pending approval of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, Grand Rapids City Clerk Joel Hondorp says the new social district covers about a block in the southeast of the city.

“This new district will be affectionately known as Alger Heights. So it will be around the area of Brass Ring, Sip and the Old Goat.”

In a social district customers can buy an alcoholic beverage in a bar or restaurant and consume it while they walk around with it outside as long as they stay in the designated district.

Social districts became a thing during the pandemic, giving bar and restaurant customers more space to social distance. There are already several in Grand Rapids, including a big one downtown.

“All the social districts have been very successful. Another district wants to get in on the game."
