Mel Trotter is the largest provider of services to people experiencing homelessness in West Michigan.
The faith-based organization is celebrating its 125th anniversary Monday, February 24 from 8AM-4PM by asking for donations of essential items for men, women and children. CEO Chris Palusky says the mission has evolved into a multifaceted ministry that serves not only the unhoused but also those on the brink.
“We try to divert that from happening, so maybe we work with a landlord, and we help them to not have to leave the place they’re living in. If they do come into homelessness, we provide a shelter for them. We have over 600 beds in this place downtown.”
Donors can pull to the curb at the mission’s front entrance on Commerce Avenue SW and a volunteer will come to the car and collect the items.
“Men's T-shirts, new underwear, individually wrapped toothbrushes, deodorant, tennis shoes, sheets, razors, and shaving cream.
For those who wish to donate outside of the drop off schedule, there is an Amazon wish list on the Mel Trotter website for online donations.
