The new $6.2 million Godwin Mercado marketplace will sit on 4.6 acres of vacant parking lot across from the former GM plant site at 301 36th Street Southwest, just west of Buchanen Avenue.
“It’s been a really big hole, I think, in the city for the last 15 years or so.”
Wyoming City Manager John Shay says this is the first step in the revitalization of the former GM corridor.
“Not only do you see this new Godwin Mercado marketplace coming to fruition, you see construction activity behind us at Site 36, so Corewell Health and Benteler and Gelock, so we’re really transforming an area that’s really been through a rough spot.”
The new market will serve as a year-round venue for farmers and artisan markets, live music, food demonstrations, community events and more.

Shay says the name, Godwin Mercado, reflects the heritage of the community.
“It recognizes the neighborhood we’re in and it recognizes that Wyoming is a very diverse place. About 20-25% of our population is Hispanic.”
Construction has already begun on the marketplace and is expected to be complete in August 2025.
