The David and Carol Van Andel Family Foundation donated $8 million to the Pine Rest Pediatric Center of Behavioral Health to help fund construction of the first-of-its-kind center in Michigan.
In May, Pine Rest broke ground on the $98 million pediatric center that will feature a new Psychiatric Urgent Care facility.
Medical Director Dr. Heide Rollings says one goal is to reduce the often long wait times for care.
“Having a walk-in clinic specifically for behavioral health that’s called ‘urgent care’ where kids can come in and get assessment quicker and get plugged in to treatment needs quicker so they may not develop into as much of a crisis as some of what we’re seeing today.”
It will also expand specialty outpatient services that are expected to reach 10,000 more children each year.
“Children or teens that have certain diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability or eating disorders or even younger children with behavioral challenges will have more accessibility to programs in our center.”
The center will also expand inpatient care with partial hospitalization programs, same-day psychiatric assessments and telehealth services to reach more children statewide, especially in rural areas without much other access to healthcare options.
Construction is scheduled to finish spring 2026.
