Emergency Meal Boxes are filled with shelf-stable foods for seniors to have in their homes in case Meals on Wheels Western Michigan drivers are ever unable to deliver regular weekly meals due to severe weather.
The organization is looking for volunteers to deliver those emergency packages to seniors in Kent and Allegan counties this Saturday.
“We have been so blessed the community came out for us tenfold and we are at 93 routes that will be going out this October 19th.
Kayla Herold is the Volunteer Manager and says the extra effort ensures no senior goes hungry or forgotten especially during winer months when unpredictable weather can create barriers to getting food. It’s also about social connection.
“About 30% of our home-delivered meal clients say that their driver is the only person they talk to all week, so the volunteers are giving them another chance for community, for conversation, and obviously the emergency meal delivery as well.”
Drivers must be 18 or older and can sign up for a route on the Meals on Wheels Western Michigan website.
