West Michigan pizza places are teaming up with TalkSooner to help parents have drug use prevention talks with their kids

The promotion is called “Any Way You Slice It, Prevention Matters” and it partners the group TalkSooner with local pizza makers to serve up 2,500 informational fliers and 3,000 pizza cutters as a way to spark important conversations during National Family Meals month.

“A dining table hopefully is the time you’re laughing and sharing stories from your day. If you can pull in some little nuggets of information on prevention, that’s what we’re talking about.”

Vicki Kavanaugh is a prevention specialist with TalkSooner and says research shows eating together regularly can reduce the chance a child or teen will engage in risky behaviors such as using tobacco, alcohol or drugs. It’s less about having a perfect meal and more about building strong bonds and taking the opportunity to talk.

“If you’re having to eat in the car because busy lives, that’s good. It’s the act of taking time to be together and have whatever conversation you can. That’s the important thing.”

Pizza partners include Cadena Brothers in Cloversville, Don Petrino’s in Holland, Chuck Wagon in Ludington, Russo’s in Wyoming, Golden Sands in Oceana County and C D’s Quik Mart in Allegan County.
