Close to 1.3 million Michiganders are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend

Michigan residents are forecast to travel in numbers that exceed pre-pandemic levels for this year’s Memorial Day weekend. Over 1.3 million state residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more. That from AAA which has been tracking and forecasting numbers since 2000. They say these numbers include close to 13-thousand more holiday travelers than 2019. And it’s the kickoff to what they say will be a very busy summer of travel.

Here’s AAA spokesperson, Adrianne Woodland.

“We’ve seen steady year over year growth since 2020 and Memorial Day 2024 is no different. There’s strong consumer interest in traveling both domestically and internationally.”

Woodland says road trips are expected to be the second highest on record as well in Michigan and to set a record nationwide. AAA projects nearly 38.4 million will travel by car this weekend. The highest number since 2000.

“Traveling by car is definitely appealing because of convenience and flexibility those traveling by car, and you may see gas prices the same or slightly higher compared to last year.”

Woodland encourages those that choose to travel by car to play it safe as AAA already expects to rescue more than 378-thousand motorist nationwide over the holiday weekend. She says to avoid this get your vehicle checked before traveling. Additionally, air travel will also spike and AAA warns this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, with more than 3.5 million Americans expected to travel.
