“This year we are trying something new.”

To make is more convenient for the community James Meeks of the United Veterans Council of Kent County says they are changing the date, time and route for their annual Memorial Day parade in downtown Grand Rapids.

“Because people have to go away on Memorial Day we are going to try to do it on the 25th so on Saturday at 10am we will have a parade followed by a ceremony.”

In the past the Memorial Day parade in Grand Rapids was typically scheduled in the evening on May 30th, the traditional date for the holiday. Organizers want to find out if Saturday morning works better for participants and spectators.

“We want to include as many individuals, families and organizations as possible.”

Along with the new date and time the parade will also take a different path through downtown...starting on Lyon Street and ending, as usual, for the concluding ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park on Fulton.

“Give the public an opportunity at the beginning of the 3-day weekend to join us to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.
