Barnard Construction Company and Civil and Building North America were chosen by Enbridge to build the four-mile tunnel that would house a new segment of Line 5 under the Straits' lake bed.
Enbridge says the two companies combined have built nearly 400 miles of tunnel. A state board appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer also reviewed and approved the contractors.
An Enbridge spokesperson says the company will not be disclosing the cost of the contract at this time.
The US Army Corps of Engineers will decide whether to grant the remaining permit necessary for the project in 20-26. The tunnel would then take around four years to build.
