The lawsuit seeks to shut down the 60-year-old pipeline that carries Canadian crude oil through the Straits of Mackinac.

A federal appeals court is hearing arguments on the future of the case involving the Line 5 petroleum pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac.

Environmentalists say potential leaks are a danger to the Great Lakes. Pipeline owner Enbridge insists its safe and will be safer once a new tunnel is built.

The case started in state court in 2019 then Enbridge filed for the case to be moved to federal court.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel wants it back in state court and is asking the appeals court to decide. The lawsuit seeks to shut down the 60-year-old pipeline that carries Canadian crude oil through the Straits of Mackinac.

Demonstrator Robin Hendricks came to support the AG’s efforts and is part of a group called Kalamazoo Remembers.

“We don’t want to forget about the spill that happened in 2010 on Line 6B. Enbridge can’t be trusted.”

Demonstrator Elizabeth Clark lived in Kalamazoo and got involved in water protection issues since that spill.

“The clean-up still hasn’t been completed and here we are years later - over a decade later - worried about the decommission of the aging Line 5 pipeline which is a ticking timebomb in our Great Lakes.”

Enbridge is an underwriter of WGVU Public Media.
