WGVU Vote of Confidence preview Michigan 29th Senate District race

Michigan’s Senate Majority Leader, Winnie Brinks, is term-limited and running for Lieutenant Governor. That’s opened the Grand Rapids area’s 29th Senate district seat.

Democrat Abbie Groff-Blaszak has over 25 years in public service including education, state government, elected leadership and nonprofit sector. Her top priority is investing in public education.

“And that means for the first time fully and appropriately funding our schools so that we can pay educators appropriately, so that we can provide all the students the services and resources they need and really truly make sure that every child gets an excellent education.”

Groff-Blaszak’s second priority is closing affordability gaps by raising wages, making housing attainable, providing accessible and high-quality healthcare. Finally, rebuilding the state’s tax system so that everyone pays their fair share.

Republican Brady A. Middleton is a manufacturing and technology entrepreneur co-founding Metas in 2016. In 2009, he was the victim of a violent assault resulting in a traumatic brain injury. He would later forgive and mentor his juvenile attacker. His priorities are investing in education, making energy affordable and reliable, and attracting and retaining talent.

“We need to invest in our teachers, our students, our skilled trades, our small businesses, our entrepreneurs, we need to invest in our community, and we need to do it smartly. Not giving our tax dollars away to big, large corporations like the establishment has for the last four years. I believe in you.”
