Unless it can be challenged, Muskegon Heights mayor Bonnie McGlothin’s term in office ended early and unexpectedly Monday

“Right now we don’t have a mayor.”

Muskegon Heights City Attorney Te Smith says the city charter is clear. A mayor or council member can’t miss 3 consecutive meetings without an approved excuse, and he says the mayor missed 3 in August.

“At the moment the third meeting was missed in a row it was a done deal. The charter doesn’t say may forfeit the charter doesn’t say council can excuse it after the fact the charter says shall. Shall means must.”

“I’ll step outside, but you will hear from my attorney.”

McGlothin packed up her belongings and got up from her seat at this week’s council meeting but said she is not quitting.

“This is not a quit. Just to let everybody know this is not a quit but I’m not going to sit here and hear the lies. You will hear from my attorney.”

“For me I need to know what is the next step.”

The next step for council is a special meeting Thursday evening, but the city attorney says without mayor McGlothin who was first elected to council over 20 years ago.

“Nobody is above the law.”
