Rendering of Froebel Place project

Construction has begun on the long-awaited project in Muskegon as crews broke ground on the renovation of the former Froebel School Wednesday

The $16 million renovation will transform the former Froebel School into Froebel Place, a 46-unit affordable housing development.

The Spanish-Revival style building on Jackson Avenue was originally built in 1930 and was vacant for more than 20 years before nonprofit developer Samaritas partnered with the city to renovate the site, including historic preservation of key features.

The rehabilitation will convert former classrooms into apartments ranging from studios up to three-bedroom units along with a community room, auditorium, reception area, courtyard, and offices.

Affordable housing units will be set aside for residents earning 30-80% of the area median income.

Public and private funding includes state tax credits and federal grants.

Construction is expected to finish in December 2027 with full occupancy by mid-2028.
