The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy reissued water permits that expired saying that public and private needs outweighed other criteria.
A permit from the Department of Natural Resources requires Enbridge to reduce impacts on rare animals and plants.
David Holtz coordinates the anti-Line 5 group Oil and Water Don’t Mix.
“But the bigger picture is that there should be no destruction, no wetlands destruction, there should be no forest destruction for a project that is not needed.”
Holtz says the coalition plans to challenge the permit decisions through a state administrative process.
Enbridge spokesperson Ryan Duffy says the permits are an important step forward for the project, and that Line 5 continues to operate safely.
