There is concern about inconvenience and congestion while a roundabout is built and streets are repaved this summer at a busy Kentwood intersection

“It’s going to be a total closure. We are trying to build a traffic circle so it will be a complete detour.”

While the roundabout is under construction at Shaffer Avenue and 36th Street Kentwood Director of Engineering James Kirkwood the only traffic getting through the intersection will be nearby residents

“Local traffic will be able to get in and to their homes, but thru traffic will be detoured the entire summer.”

The project also includes reconstruction of Shaffer Avenue between 32nd Street and 44th Street, and 36th Street from Shaffer to Broadmoor Avenue. Commissioner Clarkston Morgan is concerned about the inconvenience.

“Taking place during the summer.  There is a lot of activity so I’m just trying to prepare ourselves for hearing from our residents.  We deal with this every summer no matter where we are at.”

During a briefing to the city commission Kirkwood says crews will make sure a pair of polling places in the construction zone are accessible to voters in the August election. He says the project will start in June and he hopes finish by the end of August.

“You’ve heard us talk about this the last couple of years, it’s finally going to get built this summer.”
