Michigan drivers face a higher fuel tax beginning next month

The price per gallon jumps from 31 cents to just over 52 cents in 2026.

But state officials say drivers should hit the brakes on panicking because they will only see about a one-and-a-half cent increase at the pump.

The state is removing the six percent sales tax from motor fuel. It’s part of the road funding deal Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a few months ago.

It’s also affecting electric vehicles.

An EV registration fee is linked to a rise in the fuel tax, meaning that surcharge will almost double for both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
