Nearly half the length of a popular West Michigan bike trail is closing for a year-long reconstruction

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources closed a 12-mile southern section of the Musketawa Trail in Ottawa County Monday for reconstruction, according to the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Department.

The project, which is expected to last 12 months, will be closed starting at the Marne trailhead on 8th Avenue heading west and ending at Squires Road, making the trailheads and parking lots at both Marne and Conklin inaccessible during this time.

Work on the $7 million project includes replacing eleven culverts, trail repaving, replacing a bridge and extensive tree clearing.

Funding for the project comes from a proposed $12.5 million in federal relief funding allocated in Governor Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan.

Work on the Muskegon County portion of the Musketawa Trail will happen at a later date once the DNR has more reconstruction funding in place.
