Ottawa Sands County Park to temporarily close

Ottawa County Parks and Recreation

An Ottawa County park will be temporarily closing to guests starting April 1

Starting April 1st, Ottawa Sands County Park will be closed to the public due to construction and restoration work.

While construction work has been ongoing at the Idema Explorer’s Camp with the addition of treehouses, yurts, and other campsites, major construction will commence on the day-use area parking lot and modern restroom, paved path around the lake and other ecological enhancements.

When asked if the decision to close the county park was last-minute, Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Communications Specialist Rylie Dorman said in a statement to WGVU, “The decision to close Ottawa Sands was pending the commencement of several planned projects at the site. With several projects simultaneously underway in the heaviest used areas of the park, the safety of the site for public use was not practical. After thoughtful consideration, the choice to close Ottawa Sands was made with the primary focus on public safety.”

According to Dorman, the department is confident the park will reopen by late summer.
