A pilot project is underway on I-94 to create a smart lane from Detroit to Ann Arbor.
The lane will be lined with cameras and sensors that will provide real-time safety information to connected and automated vehicles.
MDOT Project manager Michelle Mueller says the information provided will be more reliable than traffic apps.
You're relying on people and users of the system for that where, in this case, the system and the software would be not only identifying maybe incident, breathe, whatever congestion, weather, whatever that be. But then also when that clears up, providing the insights associated with that being cleared.
The pilot is currently along just a 3 mile stretch through Van Buren Township and runs through December 2025.
