The board approved a six-figure settlement with an Episcopal Priest who sued when the commissioners would not let him lead a pre meeting prayer

“Approve the settlement in Cramer v Ottawa County.”

If he had any regrets about paying Grand Haven priest Jared Cramer a $100,000 settlement Ottawa County board chair Joe Moss did not make them public, the board’s discussion was behind closed doors.

“Because an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the litigation.”

St. John’s Episcopal Church pastor Jared Cramer sued Ottawa County because he says the board ignored his repeated requests to lead the prayer offered before every board meeting. He thinks he wasn’t scheduled because he is an advocate for LGBTQ people and minorities.

“I pray for those who have been or continue to be impacted by the decisions of this board.”

After he filed his lawsuit the board scheduled Father Cramer to deliver the pre meeting invocation.

“I pray for queer kids who have been told they are broken I pray for queer adults who increasingly don’t feel safe.”

Earlier this year the county paid $225,000 to settle an age discrimination lawsuit and $188,000 to the attorney for health officer Adeline Hambley who they tried and failed to fire.

“I pray that decency love and justice will once more come to the forefront of how our county operates.”
