Meijer plans to demolish an existing gas station and convenience store to build a new one on 28th Street

Meijer officials confirm the grocery store chain has purchased the former Christian Reformed Church property on 1700 28th Street in Grand Rapids with a purchase price listed at $7.3 million.

Plans are to demolish the current gas station and convenience store to the south on Kalamazoo Avenue, build a new one on 28th Street, and prepare the land for future development.

At the City Planning Commission meeting in August, Meijer’s Real Estate Manager Matt Levitt said it’s a phased project starting with the demolition of the CRC buildings and construction of the new gas station fronted on 28th Street.

“And then immediately close the former gas station, raze it and do any environmental clean-up. We don’t believe there is any environmental clean- up but if there is, we will address the environmental clean-up and return that site to pre-development status. So we will seed it. It will be grass. It will look like nothing had ever been built there before.”

Levitt said the team is already fielding numerous requests about when the three outlots will be available for rent or purchase by other businesses.

He expects that part of the project to move ahead in one to two years.
