“This is a project we have been looking at its been on my wish list for a long time.”
When he was first elected in 2016, Ottawa County sheriff Steve Kempker told citizens he would put body cameras on department staff. Its taken 8 years for him to keep his promise
“The community keeps asking where they are where are they. This is not something I can go to a big box store and buy off the shelf.”
Instead, the county will buy 222 body cameras, docking stations, software and other equipment from a company called Axon.
“This also includes the in-car cameras for our patrol units and the audio so you will really be able to paint the whole picture.”
Technology county commissioner Roger Belknap says will make deputies
“Essentially remote film crews on one person.”
After delivery and training, the sheriff tells commissioners the cameras should be in the field early next year.
“I think they are going to benefit us benefit the community in the future and the safety of our officers.”
“It sounds like we are on the right track we are.”
