The city is proposing the use of $625,000 in reserves from its local street fund to improve four streets that are among some of the worst in the city. That’s according to Muskegon Public Works Director Dan VanderHeide, who proposed the upgrades during the city commission’s most recent work session.
“We did look at the state of the street funds and found that even keeping six-months recommended minimum expenses in cash that there was some money available in the fund that had not been programmed. And so this is a proposal to you all to take a good portion of that money, $625,000, and spend that on local street reconstructions.”
The roads being considered for repair include Second Street, Edgewater Street, Millard Avenue and New Street. VanderHeide explains why.
“These streets have been selected because their utilities are in good shape, with the exception of lead service lines, which would be replaced before work was done. They were selected based on their condition, they are four of definitely the worst streets in the city, they were selected due to geographic location, essentially a street or two in each part of town, and they were selected because they fit really within our ability to as an engineering department and as a public works department to complete.”
Work on Edgewater and Millard are expected to begin in the spring, while New and Second Streets would see work begin later in 2024.
