Takes over for Frank Peterson who stepped down earlier this year

Muskegon has a new city manager, as officials Monday held a swearing-in ceremony at City Hall.

Monday marks the first day for Muskegon’s new city manager, Jonathan Seyferth.

The swearing in ceremony follows a nationwide search for the city’s next manager after Frank Peterson announced his resignation earlier this year.

The position is a homecoming for Seyferth, who earlier in his career worked as the city’s downtown development manager. More recently, he has worked as the manager of Gaines Township, and as the City Manager of Coopersville.

Addressing the Muskegon City Commission, Seyferth laid out his plans for the first 180 days on the job.

“A lot of listening,” he said. “I don’t think it behooves a city manager to come in and say, ‘I know how to do things better than you do.’ I think you need to understand the structures and mechanisms you have in place. You have a great staff, things are moving in a good direction, so it will be a lot of listening.”

Seyferth won the job over Deputy City Manager LeighAnn Mikesell, the other sole finalist for the position. Mikesell had served as Interim after Peterson stepped down.

She remains at City Hall.
