The invasive carp can eat their way through an ecosystem, damaging native species and tourism built on fishing

About nine months ago, after meeting with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, President Trump vowed to quickly release funds approved by Congress to build a barrier at a choke point in waters near Chicago to keep the carp away from Lake Michigan.

“And they’re very powerful fish. I mean I see ‘em, they jump out of the water, they jump at the fishermen. I mean I’ve never seen anything like it.”

But Illinois and Michigan officials say the funding is still undergoing administrative review. Trump reportedly said he would refuse to release the money until he personally received a request from Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

He and Trump have repeatedly clashed, and last year Pritzker delayed work on the carp barrier until the federal government ensured it would provide its share of the funding.
