Talking trash: Grand Rapids leaders consider single hauler option and ask residents for input

Grand Rapids leaders want to hear what residents think before deciding if they’ll become the only residential trash collection option in the city

The new Single Hauler proposal for residential trash collection would make the city the sole provider of trash pick-up for all single-family homes and small multi-unit buildings.

The goal is to improve service, reduce the number of heavy trucks on neighborhood streets, lower environmental impacts, and create an equitable system for all residents.

By moving away from multiple private haulers operating independently, city leaders hope to streamline operations, enhance accountability and ensure consistent service across all neighborhoods.

But they want to hear what residents think before making a final decision.

Residents are invited to attend one of two upcoming community meetings to learn more about the proposal from public works staff and share feedback.

The first public session will be 6 p.m. Monday, September 15 at Sibley Elementary School; the second session will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 18, at GRPS University on Fuller Avenue.
