Grand Rapids city officials want to talk trash with residents

During a public engagement session, residents can share their perspective on garbage, recycling, and yard waste removal

Grand Rapids residents who attend the second 2025 Commission Night Out will have an opportunity to talk some trash with city officials.

During a public engagement session, residents can share their perspective on garbage, recycling, and yard waste removal.

Currently, Grand Rapids residents have the option of using city refuse services or a private refuse hauler, but that could change as city leaders contemplate becoming the sole provider.

Two city commissioned reports recommend the change. They found the city’s current Pay as You Throw system, which only charges residents when a bin is put out by the road for refuse collection, is one of the most reasonable, fair, and equitable refuse systems in the country.

City officials will enter resident feedback into their single hauler decision making process. If approved, single hauler services could begin as early as 2026.

Commission Night Out takes place on July 29th at 4:30 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Academic Center.
