Grand Rapids considering becoming sole provider for residential trash collection

The city of Grand Rapids is seeking public feedback as it considers becoming the sole provider of residential trash collection

Currently, Grand Rapids city residents have the option of using city refuse services or a private refuse hauler, but that could change as the city considers becoming the sole hauler for residential homes.

The consideration comes from two separate reports: a rate study and an operational study, both of which recommend the change for several reasons.

Fewer refuse trucks mean less wear and tear on the roads, as well as lower greenhouse gas emissions. The reports also observed that the city’s current Pay as You Throw system is one of the most reasonable, fair and equitable refuse systems in the country.

The Pay as You Throw collection system, which began in 2010, only charges residents when a bin is put out by the road for refuse collection.

The city says the single hauler program is in the beginning stages of development and wants community feedback from residents, rental property associations and private haulers. If approved, the single hauler program could begin July 1st, 2027, or as soon as 2026.

City residents can take an online survey here.
