The drones will be used to collect data for a downtown parking study

Tuesday morning, the Grand Rapids Fiscal Committee recommended city commissioners approve $30,000 for a three-week parking study that will utilize drones.

Director of Mobile GR Jessica Smith explains.

“We are looking at using drone-based parking data collection for on-street and surface parking occupancy.”

Mobile GR is partnering with OHM Advisors and Quanitfly to fly the drones 300 to 400 feet above downtown, taking photos of cars parked on the street or in ground lots. The goal is to assess the demand for downtown parking.

Tuesday evening, city commissioners approved the resolution. Leaders say the city will not collect, store, or have the ability to access personal information gathered from the project.

The study will be funded by the parking operations fund.
