The Matriculation and White Coat Ceremony marks the symbolic beginning of the journey into the medical profession for first-year students in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
“We will be celebrating that by putting a white coat on them as a symbol of science and responsibility and dedication to patients. They will do that in front of their loved ones and the faculty. It's a great and exciting day for them, the college, friends and family.”
Dean Dr. Aron Sousa says the college is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its expansion in Grand Rapids.
The 2025 class includes 97 students in Grand Rapids, 93 in East Lansing.
138 are Michigan residents and 31 are first generation college students.
“The number of our students that continue their training in West Michigan and stay in West Michigan has only gone up over the last 15 years. The partnerships with Corewell and Saint Mary's and those residencies which provide additional training are so sought after by our students. It's been a great partnership for the students and the community.”
Sousa adds that up to 85% of the college’s students come from Michigan with up to 60% staying to practice medicine in the state.
