A Muskegon County man accused of stabbing his boss two weeks ago had his trial put on hold pending a competency exam

Monday, a Muskegon County judge approved a competency exam for 32-year-old Nathan Joseph Mahoney. Mahoney is charged with assault with intent to murder.

According to court documents, on December 17th, Mahoney left a staff meeting at Anderson Express in Fruitport Township. He returned 10 minutes later wearing a black medical mask. He’s accused of walking up to the company president and stabbing him in the ribcage using a 4-inch bladed knife.

The company president is expected to recover.

A hearing scheduled for Thursday was put on hold pending the competency exam, which will help the court determine if Mahoney understands the charges against him and can participate in his own defense.

He remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.
