The commission reduced last month’s rate increases after listening to citizens

“We heard from the public”

After a few complaints about beach parking prices passed last month Commissioner Jay Kilgo says they decided to reconsider the rates.

“We are bringing it back to lower the rates from what we had voted on before.”

Non-residents will still pay 40 dollars for a season pass but city manager Jonathan Seiferth says the rates on Friday Saturday and Sunday are lower.

“Rate on Monday, Tuesday Thursday Friday of 10 dollars a day, with a free day on Wednesday Saturday and Sunday will be 15 dollars this was previously at 20.”

The City started charging nonresidents for beach parking in 2020, previously it was free and Norton Shores resident Kim Fisher wonders what changed.

“My question is what were you doing before when you weren’t charging.”

“What did we do before this we didn’t not invest in our other 33 parks across the city including playgrounds and basketball courts we were spending the majority of our parks budget at Pere Marquette.

Mayor Ken Johnson says they are aiming for balance.

“Find the right balance between generating the revenues to fund the things we want and need and still make our city welcoming to everybody.”
