Seventeen dogs rescued from living in a truck in a Walker parking lot are getting ready for adoption. The dogs are receiving medical examinations

The dogs’ owner surrendered them to the Kent County Animal Shelter Tuesday after they were taken from her by animal control officers in October.

Authorities responded to a 911 call about a red Chevy Silverado parked at a Dollar Tree in Walker.

The owner was found living in the vehicle with 17 dogs in poor conditions and with no water.

The owner, charged with animal abuse, pleaded not guilty, and faces up to four years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and 500 hours of community service.

The dogs are receiving medical examinations. One of the dogs has since given birth to two puppies.

Shelter director Angela Hollinshead says, "Many of the dogs have friendly dispositions and once cleared, are likely to be adopted quickly.”

With these additions, the shelter is caring for 94 dogs; 30 are now ready for adoption. Through December 1st, there’s a special adoption fee of $50 for dogs.

Adoptable pets are listed on the Kent County Animal Shelter website.
