Need is high ahead of Mel Trotter’s annual Turkey Drop

Leaders of a Grand Rapids ministry are calling for more help to feed the hungry this Thanksgiving, saying the level of food insecurity is higher than ever

This year marks the 21st Annual Turkey Drop with a goal of collecting 5,000 frozen turkeys for those in need. Feeding America West Michigan will provide storage and distribution of the turkeys.

Mel Trotter’s Director of Development Pam Liggett says inflation and high housing costs are taking a toll, and families struggling with food insecurity are stretched to the limit leading up to the holiday.

“The need is greater than ever. In the Mel Trotter system, we are serving about 20% more people than we’ve ever served before, and we know that only scratches the surface.”

Mel Trotter Ministries is partnering with Celebration! Cinemas and WOOD Radio collecting the frozen turkeys.

The event runs Wednesday from 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. with six drop off locations: Celebration! Cinemas Grand Rapids North and South, Mel Trotter Ministries Mission on Commerce Avenue and the Jenison Thrift Store as well as the Muskegon Rescue Mission and Gateway Mission in Holland.

Those unable to drop one off on Wednesday can still help by giving money.

“You can donate via turkeydrop.org and every $20 we collect counts as one turkey toward our goal.”
