President-elect Donald Trump is pledging to keep the popular social media platform TikTok from being banned in the U.S.
That’s a change from four years ago when Trump tried to block TikTok, arguing its Chinese owners use it to gather data on U.S. citizens.
Congress passed a law requiring TikTok to find a new owner.
And Michigan Congressman John Moolenaar head of a House Committee on China says Trump pave the way for a U.S. ally to take control of the platform.
“There is a deadline of January 19th where TikTok must be sold. There also is a provision where the President can delay that if negotiations are occurring in a productive way. And so it gives the President a lot of flexibility to work on this.”
The company that currently owns TikTok is fighting the new law in court, claiming none of its user data is sent to China’s government.
