Rumors of threats on social media prompted Byron Center Public Schools to close Monday

A Kent County Sheriff’s office release Monday morning stated the investigation revealed alleged threats were a product of speculation shared over social media, stemming from an incident at the Friday football game at Byron Center against East Kentwood.

A school resource officer was told a Byron Center student had a knife.

The officer confiscated a pocket knife and determined the student did not intend to harm anyone, however the incident sparked rumors that spread online that the student was going to commit violence.

Sunday evening, Byron Center Superintendent Kevin Macina sent a letter to families stating, “out of an abundance of caution…for the safety of the entire BCPS community the whole district will be closed on Monday” to continue a more comprehensive investigation.

The East Kentwood Freshman Campus Principal Dominic Lowe also sent a letter Sunday night informing families the social media conversations had been thoroughly investigated and successfully resolved with no threat to the safety of the school community.

Kentwood schools remained open.
