West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science in Walker closed Monday after a threat was discovered on social media last week.
Principal Nathan VanDuinen sent an email to parents last week saying an anonymous threat had been found on a bathroom wall referencing Monday, October 14th. While that threat was found to not be credible, another email was sent to parents Sunday evening explaining that additional concerns had been found on social media.
VanDuinen wrote, “… we have made the decision to close school on Monday, October 14th, strictly out of an abundance of caution.” The email did not specify what those concerns were, but the school is working with the Walker Police Department to investigate.
This is the latest incident in a string of closures affecting West Michigan schools due to threats over the past several weeks. Schools in Byron Center, Grand Rapids Township, Grandville, Jenison, and Three Rivers have all closed schools and cancelled events due to online or overheard threats.
Threats can be reported to Michigan’s OK2SAY tipline online or by calling 8-555-OK2SAY or calling the school directly.
