The job description requires a college degree, Commissioner Jay Kilgo doesn’t have one

“I was told I can’t interview for the position because I don’t have a bachelor's degree,’

Muskegon City Commissioner Jay Kilgo says he didn’t go to college after high school.

“I went the work route when I was younger,”

But says he has the skills and experience to work as Muskegon County’s new Housing Coordinator

“I’m a real estate broker so I have a lot of housing experience and I’m an elected official who has good connections and I think I would be a great candidate for the housing coordinator position.”

Some Muskegon County Commissioners are willing to give Kilgo a chance.

“I support at least we interview, I support that too.”

But the county has already narrowed the number of applicants from 72 to 19, if the bachelor’s degree requirement is eliminated human resources director Kristen wase says they would need to repost to position and start the hiring process over

“There could be folks that didn’t have a bachelor’s degree and didn’t even apply.”

Commissioner Marcia Hovey Wright and others think it’s something to keep in mind next time

“I think it is something we should consider in the future, but it would slow us down a lot at this point.”

“For future job posting for Muskegon County don’t just look at if somebody has a piece of paper that says they graduated from some school somewhere.”
