The aim is to reduce the number of cats and kittens crowded into local shelters

“We’ve had several interested parties call us over the past year wanting to open a cat café.”

Muskegon Planning Director Mike Franzak says Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and many other cities have cat cafes.

“Which are becoming very popular.”

And by unanimous vote. Muskegon will now also permit cat cafes. Commissioner Katrina Kochin thinks it’s a good idea.

“We are getting cries weekly from the shelters saying they are overfull this seems like a creative solution to that problem.”

Muskegon Vice Mayor Rebecca St. Clair: what exactly is a cat café?

“You can have a cup of coffee or tea and snuggle a cat you might be able to adopt correct you can go there to pet them but usually they are up for adoption as well.”

“I have heard some very understandable concerns about smell noise allergies.

City Commissioner Rachel Gorman.

“Are you able to address any of those concerns.”

“In each case we would have a public hearing we would notify everyone within 300 feet if they have any concerns, they could bring those to the meeting.”

“The ones I have been to have been well kept.”
