Some of the changes to the city’s charter include the ability to change the number of nominating petitions a person may sign, and require a city clerk to contact any candidate whose petition is found invalid by multiple forms of communication and permit any deficiency to be corrected.
A new bike path millage was also passed. The tax millage is for 0.2000 mills over 10 years for bike and walking path maintenance and would tax twenty cents per thousand dollars of taxable valuation. If approved, the city would collect just over $52,000 every year through 2034.
Earlier this week, U.S. Representative Hilary Scholten, who won her second term to Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District Tuesday, announced an $11.7 million investment for the repair of the West Spring Lake Road bridge, also known as “Smith’s Bayou Bridge,” through the Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
Ferrysburg city council voted to close the bridge in 2019 due to deterioration of the beams and lacked the funds to repair the structure.
No word yet on when repairs to the bridge will begin.
