Ferrysburg City Council members have discussed the possibility of developing a local nature preserve, causing confusion among residents who thought the fight to save the land was over.

MLive reports that council members discussed the possibility of advertising the 40-acre Ferrysburg Nature Preserve to developers at their meeting Monday night.

Resident Heather Hawley says the conversation shocked some in the community who were under the impression the land was going to remain preserved after city council members made it a park in 2002 at the request of residents who feared possible development.

Ferrysburg City Manager Craig Bessinger says the topic was brought up while talking about the sale of another city-owned property adjacent to City Hall.

Bessinger says no developers have reached out with proposals.
