Grand Haven man awaits sentencing after guilty plea in mPerks theft

Meijer Inc.

Nicholas Mui pled guilty to cyber-crime, having stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars in connection with the Meijer’s mPerks program

22-year-old Nicholas Mui of Grand Haven pled guilty in a Kent County court to one count of Conducting a Criminal Enterprise for the systemic theft and sale of access information tied to mPerks accounts, the Meijer grocery chain’s loyalty program.

A state police investigation showed Mui obtained login credentials from a separate data breach, cross referenced to access accounts, then sold those login credentials on the internet so buyers could fraudulently use the points to purchase items.

Meijer has reinstated full points to its affected customers at a loss of more than $1 million to the company.

Mui was arrested in January, pled guilty this week and will be sentenced in September.

With his guilty plea, Mui also forfeits his computer tower and $630,000 in cryptocurrency and cash.
