The Muskegon City Commission approved the planned development request Tuesday evening.
The project, called The Sand Docks, has been in the works since 2018 and is slated for Muskegon’s Beachwood-Bluffton neighborhood.
During Tuesday’s meeting, a representative with Damfino Development LLC, the project’s developer, said the version of the project being presented was the 19th iteration due to a number of concerns from neighbors over the years, including traffic congestion, traffic safety, and environmental impact.
The plan calls for 240 residential units, a community building with commercial space, and a community beach.
Peter Sartorius is an Edgewater resident who spoke in favor of the project, citing past issues of late-night parties, noise violations, lighting fires and leaving garbage on the beach.
“We don’t want it returning to our neighborhood beach, nor do we want to see it happen in the new neighborhood that’s being created by The Docks development.”
Another resident, Jack Page, felt a new traffic study needed to be done, as the original version was seven years old.
“I believe it’s the time for the city to begin to have an active parking and traffic control instead of passive, especially at peak times, otherwise it’s both unfair to both local residents and existing future residents who are coming in with this development.”
The Commission is expected to revisit some of the issues at future meetings.
