“The injuries are not life threatening but I’m sure he will be in the hospital for some time there is no way to get shot with a bullet in the face and have it be anything other than a life changing traumatic experience.”

Around noon Tuesday Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom says two 6th graders from Alger Middle School were in nearby Alger Park with a gun

“A semi-automatic likely nine-millimeter handgun.”

And the gun went off.

“Two young boys both students at this school together, one of them was shot in the face. He was conscious and alert and able to communicate with the police officers.”

Detectives will now try to find out why the boys had the gun, what they planned to do with it and where they got it.

“We are going to find everything we need to know about that gun. We are going to test fire it use ballistics to see the history of the gun and if there is an adult that should be held responsible.”

Under Michigan’s new safe storage law gun owners face prosecution if they fail to lock up weapons at locations where children are present.

“If a child obtains access to a gun the adult responsible for that gun is criminally liable. “
