Dyslexia screening bills head to Michigan House

Michigan public school students would undergo periodic screenings for dyslexia under legislation passed today in the state Senate

Under the legislation… the screening requirements would kick in for the fall 20-27 school year.

Republican Senator Ruth Johnson says that’s too far away.

“This is a problem the Legislature should not drag their feet on.”

Democratic Senator Dayna Polehanki says testing companies and schools need more time to develop screening tools and get teachers trained.

“Schools are a big ship that turns slowly. So it’s only fair to give these school districts that additional time.”

The bills are now heading for the Michigan House.
